Raglan rental pool dries up

- Libby Wilson libby.wilson@stuff.co.nz

About a quarter of Raglan’s rental housing pool has dried up over the past two years, new research says.

The massive drop in available housing stock comes at a time when population growth in the seaside Waikato town is well outstripping the number of new houses built.

Raglan is also popular with tourists for its surfing break and environmental focus, and the regular influx of visitors compounds the housing availability problem.

The Wha¯ ingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project aims to do something about that, and started with research.

The group has also submitted to Waikato District Council on density – including provision for ‘‘tiny house villages’’ and has local landowners interested in an affordable development.
