A bundle of joy just in time for Christmas

- Donna-Lee Biddle

When Mikayla and Shaun Chase head to Taupo¯ they’ll have an extra gift for their two children – a baby sister.

Aella Chase made her grand entrance – albeit a week late – at

2am yesterday at Waikato Hospital.

The Chase family, who live in Hamilton, planned to drive to Taupo¯ on Christmas Eve to spend the day with family.

But that all changed at a lastminute midwife appointment.

‘‘We thought we’d shoot over and see the midwife and then head off but that didn’t happen,’’ Mikayla said. ‘‘There were a few concerns with baby so we had to break my waters.’’

Mikayla’s waters broke at

10.30pm and she gave birth to Aella less than four hours later. Aella weighed in 3.71kg.

She’ll be a welcome gift for sister Isabella, 2, and brother Shaedyn, 5.

‘‘Funnily enough, our other children were born at 2.05am and 2.20am,’’ Shaun said.

December looks to be an expensive month for the young family – Mikayla and Shaun are both 22, as it’s also Isabella’s birth month. But the Chase family doesn’t mind. Mum and baby are doing well and both are healthy.

Their only immediate concern was getting to Taupo¯ in time so they could open Christmas presents with their children and extended wha¯ nau.

‘‘My midwife was going to let me carry to 42 weeks. We did the maths and she could have been a New Year’s baby. Even though we weren’t expecting her, it’s exciting to have her on Christmas, although she’ll be the one and only Christmas baby we’ll have.’’
