What’s hot for designers this season

- Josie Steenhart

Many of us are turning to super-casual shorts and jandals and clothing with stretchy waists post-Christmas, but there’s no reason not to do it in style. Here’s how some of New Zealand’s top fashion designers are spending their summers – and what they’re wearing.

Margi Robertson, NOM*d

Now Christmas is out of the way, what have you got planned for the summer? Continuing to dream and work on our Summer 2019/20 collection. It never stops!

What will you be wearing this summer?

Our Iconic tees and tank dresses. The ‘‘Nasty’’ theme from The Young Ones makes me smile, and that’s important. I love our Comicool prints. The mesh pieces work wonderfully with our stencilled tees and tank dresses. They can be casual or dressed up if mixed with the Cube dress or Crater slip.

What are a couple of favourite pieces from your collection, and why? The Hover dress in Chalkboard – it’s a gorgeous overdress with just the right amount of frill.

What’s your favourite colour for clothing this season? The new black is black.

Karen Walker

Now Christmas is out of the way, what have you got planned for the summer? Holidaying at home mainly with a big reading list and the occasional game of tennis and followed by a couple of short breaks on Auckland’s lovely islands.

What will you be wearing this summer?

Always a big straw sunhat. Sunglasses, naturally. Apart from that, a lot of cotton voile dresses.

What are a couple of favourite pieces

from your collection, and why? At the moment I’m wearing a lot of pieces in silk cotton or cotton voile with our pale blue Utopian floral print. There’s something about the lightness of the cloth and palette that’s so right for high summer.

What’s your favourite colour for clothing this season? Pale blue,

scarlet and cream. Steven Dunstan, Huffer

Now Christmas is out of the way, what have you got planned for the summer?

After recent connection with (and purchase in) Piha, I’ll be living the dream, and balance, of living in a beach community, with frequent time spent in the city and international travel – it’s a great recipe and to me, this balance is my happy place – it makes me appreciate every aspect.

What will you be wearing this summer?

Hopefully not much – in the ocean at Piha! With a strong range of summer products in Huffer featuring linen, which is perfect for long, hot summer days, and attire that works both in and out of the water.

What are a couple of favourite pieces from your collection, and why? While we have great summery pieces in the range, the New Zealand summer is also a busy international travel period for me, so the Super Down product is key in surviving the Northern Hemisphere elements.

What’s your favourite colour for clothing this season? The colour blue, but applied in vertical stripes with a white base. Emily Miller-Sharma, Liam Now Christmas is out of the way, what

have you got planned for the summer? I’m taking a couple of weeks off from the end of January and will be celebrating Waitangi Day in Waitangi for the first time.

What will you be wearing this summer? My

100 per cent favourite thing about summer dressing is the concept of the night look: when you’re on holiday, there is always that time of day when you notice that you want to brush your hair, or maybe put on a pair of earrings or do a costume change. It could be a big or small variation from what you had been wearing during the day, but I love the feeling of that shift – it makes me feel excited.

What are a couple of favourite pieces from your collection, and why? I

love the linen Nirvana skirt – such a brilliant and true colour, and the bias cut means it’s a slim fit shape that can

move in and out with your curves.

What’s your favourite colour for clothing this season?

Turquoise.

Jessica Grubisa, Harman Grubisa

Now Christmas is out of the way, what have you got planned for the

summer? A classic Kiwi summer! Think ice blocks, beaches, barbecues – I want it all! (Minus the jandals). One of my close friends is getting married in Omaha in early January – this brings all my best friends from around the globe back to New Zealand for summer – I can’t wait!

What will you be wearing this summer?

Floaty, effortless silk twin pieces – day to night relaxed pyjama dressing.

What are a couple of favourite pieces from your collection, and why? The Malibu shirt and pants – a polka dot silk set that I am living in at the moment. The Lennox is also divine, a perfect silk PJ-style boy’s shirt. I wear it with everything – it’s the perfect mix of ‘‘I don’t care but I do’’.

What’s your favourite colour for clothing this season? Crisp blue pin stripes – does that count, haha?! Silky maroon and lush tan golds.

Anjali Burnett, Twenty-Seven Names

Now Christmas is out of the way, what have you got planned for the summer? Fitting out our new Wellington store – we’re moving our flagship to 25 Ghuznee St – so no rest for the wicked.

What will you be wearing this summer? The

Julia dress, or painting clothes depending on whether I’m mucking in or mum’ing about.

What are a couple of favourite pieces from

your collection, and why? I love my Understudy tee. It’s got just the right amount of pop and I’ve worn it most days this season. The J.Peterman blouse makes for something a little special for work or play.

What’s your favourite colour for clothing this season? Whero/red. Better red than dead.
