Wood scores late FA Cup winner for Burnley

-

Kiwi Chris Wood came off the bench to help Burnley advance over Barnsley in the FA Cup third round.

Wood came on in the 74th minute for Sam Vokes and converted a 92nd minute penalty, after Matej Vydra was brought down in the box by a Barnsley defender.

Burnley – who had gone 64 games without being awarded a penalty – also won a penalty in the 74th minute but it was overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) for offside before it could be taken.

It was Wood’s third goal in as many games, after he ended a scoring drought against West Ham in the Premier League on New Year’s Eve.

Meanwhile, it is a case of different competition, same result for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United collected a fifth straight win to start his tenure as manager, with his team beating secondtier Reading 2-0 in the FA Cup third round. The other four victories came in the Premier League.

Juan Mata (penalty) and Romelu Lukaku scored the first-half goals for United, allowing Solskjaer to join the great Matt Busby (in 1946) as the only Manchester United managers to win their first five games. The Norwegian is in charge until the end of the season after replacing the fired Jose Mourinho but has said he wants the job on a fulltime basis.

Five top-flight teams followed United into the last 32, among them titleholder Chelsea after their 2-0 home win over second-tier Nottingham Forest. Alvaro Morata scored both goals for Chelsea, who beat Manchester United in last season’s final at Wembley Stadium.

Cesc Fabregas, who had a penalty saved in the first half, left the field to applause late in what is likely to be his last game for Chelsea before completing a reported move to Monaco.

Everton won at home to fourth-tier Lincoln 2-1, West Ham beat second-tier Birmingham 2-0, while Brighton won at Bournemouth 3-1 in an all-Premier League matchup.

Not all Premier League teams advanced, with Cardiff upset 1-0 at thirdtier Gillingham and Southampton held 2-2 at second-tier Derby County.
