Easter weather unsettled

- Stuff reporters

There’s an unsettled shift in the weather outlook for Easter.

MetService is also forecasting a largely fine day today, with the exception of isolated showers in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, as a southerly flow pushes onto the east coast of the North Island.

Good Friday is expected to be fine for the most part, but a front is forecast to move onto Fiordland and southern Westland later in the day, bringing rain, which could be heavy. The forecast is for the weather to stay dry further north and east of the divide in the South Island, although there could be some late rain in Southland.

The North Island could have cloudy periods in Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and the Far North.

Saturday is expected to have a few showers about Northland and the Coromandel Peninsula, and there could be cloudy periods south of Taranaki, while the rest of the North Island should be fine. For the South Island, MetService is forecasting an unsettled Saturday with rain or showers, and a possibility of heavy falls.

On Easter Sunday, the South Island is forecast to have rain or showers, possibly heavy at first, clearing south of the southern lakes. In the North Island, a few showers are expected to turn to rain in the west, south of Auckland, with possible heavy falls.

Rain or showers are expected to spread across the North Island on Monday, while the South Island is forecast to be dry in the west and south, while showers are forecast to gradually clear in the east and north.

Auckland is forecast to stay fine through to the end of Saturday, with a few showers as northerlies develop on Sunday, then rain turning to showers on Monday.

Wellington could stay fine through tomorrow, then on Saturday strong northerlies are expected to arrive and cloud to increase. Periods of rain are expected on Sunday, as strong northerlies turn into southerlies continuing on Monday, along with some showers. Christchurch is also expected to stay fine through tomorrow, with showers developing on Saturday evening, continuing through Sunday, then gradually clearing.
