Teen injured in hit and run

The mother of a Hamilton teenager injured in an apparent hit-and-run is urging the driver to turn themselves in.

Zak Kilgour was leaving Hamilton Boys’ High School on Peachgrove Rd on Tuesday about 3.15pm when he was struck by the car.

The 14-year-old said he checked there were no cars coming and went to cross the road, but when he looked again a black car was too close and didn’t stop.

He was hit by the car and suffered a broken ankle, which might require surgery, concussion and multiple scrapes

After he had been hit a bus driver came to see if he needed help.

It was then he realised the driver of the car had not stopped. I knew the car would have parked up and (the driver) helped me but I saw no sign of it, it was gone.

‘‘I feel heartbroken the person didn’t help me out. [They] could have stopped.’’

Zak said he felt traumatised after the incident as he never thought he would get hit by a car and he wanted to know what the driver was thinking.

‘‘Why did you hit me and why didn’t you stop to help me?’’

He said because of the incident he felt ‘‘unsafe’’ on the roads now.

His mum Kayla Kilgour, 33, said she got a call from the school telling her Zak had been in an accident.

‘‘I thought he had grazed his leg.’’ When she found out he had been hit by a car she broke down and rushed to hospital, beating the ambulance there.

‘‘I didn’t realise till the police came that the car had actually left him.’’

She was upset and angry when she heard the news.

‘‘Who would hit a child and leave them?’’

Kilgour had to take time off work to look after Zak as he recovered from his injuries as he could not put any weight on his ankle and was having to use a wheelchair.

‘‘I am just lucky he is alive really.’’ She wanted to ask the driver why they had not stopped.

‘‘What if he was your child? You left an innocent child lying on the road, what if he died?’’

Kilgour pleaded with the driver to hand themselves in.

‘‘It will eat you alive otherwise.’’ Police confirmed they are investigating the incident.

‘‘[They] could have stopped . . . . why did you hit me and why didn’t you stop to help me?’’ Zak Kilgour
