Entire Westport street attracts interested buyers

- Colleen Hawkes

It’s rare to see an entire street of houses for sale, but the Westport, Buller, street featured on Stuff earlier this week has generated plenty of interest – and nobody seems bothered by the name ‘‘Cape Foulwind’’.

Stuff asked the question, ‘‘what could you do with a street of houses’’, and it appears at least 35 people have an idea.

Listing agent Chris Harding of JLL said he had to get up at 5am yesterday morning to answer about 35 email inquiries regarding the property.

‘‘The response has been really good,’’ he said.

‘‘I will be over there from Sunday to Tuesday, and many of these people will be coming to have a look.’’

Harding said the 10 houses on Larsen St were originally built in the early 1960s for the Cape Foulwind Cement Works at Westport. But Holcim closed the plant in 2016 and the assets are now being sold.

The three-bedroom houses, built from concrete block and well maintained, are not permanently rented, so there will be vacant possession.

‘‘They have been used by workers demolishing the cement works, but they [the workers] will all be gone by tomorrow,’’ Harding said.

‘‘The property, which includes some very special land with great sites for new houses, is on one title, but it can be subdivided. Part of the work on that has already been done.’’

Harding said the ex-manager’s house, in Cape Foulwind Rd, is also on the market.

The houses on the Larsen St property, which is for sale by negotiation, are all 120 square

metres, and sit on large sections with garages and sheds.

Harding said a rental appraisal showed they could each be rented out from between $280 and $300 a week.

‘‘In terms of working out the value of the property, you can look at the yield,’’ Harding said. ‘‘The RV [rateable value] is

$1.55 million, but that doesn’t appear to take into account the spare land for building.

‘‘We think the price is going to be somewhere around the

$2m mark.’’
