Kyrgios questions trio’s ‘intellectual level’

-

Nick Kyrgios has once again taken aim at fellow tennis superstars Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev, questioning whether they have the ‘‘intellectual level’’ to understand the problems he has with their behaviour during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thiem called Kyrgios out overnight, questioning why he felt the need to ‘‘interfere’’ when Zverev was caught partying despite placing a self-imposed, self-isolation period on himself after the ill-fated, Djokovic-led Adria Tour.

‘‘Kyrgios did a lot of mistakes himself. It would be better for him to come clean instead of criticising others,’’ Thiem said.

Thiem also said it was ‘‘bad luck’’ that Zverev was filmed partying after having promised to go into self-isolation.

Kyrgios clearly wasn’t copping the criticism yesterday.

He launched an explosive pair of tweets which started with his aim squarely on world No 3 Thiem.

‘‘What are you talking about @ThiemDomi? Mistakes like smashing rackets? Swearing? Tanking a few matches here or there? Which everyone does?’’ Kyrgios asked. ‘‘None of you have the intellectual level to even understand where I’m coming from. I’m trying to hold them accountable.’’

Six minutes later, Kyrgios turned his attention to Djokovic and Zverev.

‘‘This just shows what a joke @ThiemDomi, @AlexZverev & @DjokerNole think this is,’’ he said.

‘‘Two of them partying like potato’s [sic] during a global pandemic. People losing lives, loved ones and friends, and then Thiem standing up for the ‘mistake’.

‘‘These guys are the ‘top’ of our sport. SMH [shaking my head].’’

Kyrgios has been a vocal critic of Djokovic, Zverev and all other players that took part in the Serbian’s infamous Adria Tour.

Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Victor Troicki all tested positive to Covid-19 virus in the week after the event, which was held in Serbia and saw thousands of fans watch some of tennis’ biggest stars compete.

Kyrgios has also repeatedly slammed the ATP and the USTA, who are pushing on with plans to host the US Open at Flushing Meadows at the end of August.
