Canterbury romp to win over Otago

-

Canterbury Kings made a winning start to the Twenty20 Super Smash, comfortably accounting for Otago Volts by 61 runs at Molyneux Park in Alexandra yesterday.

South African batsman Chad Bowes scored a swift 72 from 48 at the top of the order, including three sixes and six fours, to anchor Canterbury’s 185-run total.

He was ably supported by Ken McClure, who struck 40 from 26 in his first T20 appearance in four years.

Otago were unable to get anywhere close to the required run rate as Ed Nuttal (3-18) and Matt Henry 3-25) ripped through their middle order.

Canterbury completed the job with eight balls remaining, with Otago still 61 runs short of the target.

Earlier, White Ferns Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu combined with bat and ball to steer Canterbury

Magicians to a dominant eight-wicket win in their opening game of the women’s competition, despite losing opener Frankie Mackay to a golden duck.

Canterbury recovered from Mackay’s first-ball dismissal to make light work of Otago Sparks’ 113-run target with Satterthwaite blazing an unbeaten 56 from 40.

Tahuhu (3-11) and Gabby Sullivan (3-19) were influential with the ball, taking three wickets apiece as Canterbury skittled Otago for 112.

Defending a small total, Otago made a perfect start with the ball when teenager Molly Loe trapped Mackay lbw on the first ball of the innings. But Satterthwaite picked up the pieces, scoring a half-century from just 35 balls before Kate Ebrahim (22 from 20) hit the winning run with 4.3 overs to spare.
