Drivers sought for NZ Classic cycling event
Waipa cycling fans are in for a treat early in the new year.
The New Zealand Cycle Classic is recognised as the premier international road cycling event in New Zealand.
Next year (January 23-27) it will be held for the first time right on our doorstep in Cambridge and Te Awamutu.
It is a UCI 2.2 event and will host 15 international pro teams and five New Zealand based teams, including a strong local team sponsored by Spoken Cycles and GD Pringle Building.
“This is going to be an epic event to get involved in, and we have been given the opportunity to be right there amongst the action,” says Melinda Loader, secretary of Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club.
“The club has been approached by the organisers to help supply drivers and helpers. These will be paid roles.
“Two drivers are required for the commissaires. You must be confident drivers — cyclists who are confident driving in a bunch of cyclists or passing cyclists at any time.
“Six people are needed for the three neutral service cars — two in each car. These drivers will need to be confident driving in a cycle race and have at least a 2019 club cycling licence.”
Loader says the club also needs people to officiate as finish lane crew.
“We need four people to help with the set up of the finish lane each day. This involves the finish arch and presentation dais, a bit of heavy lifting but nothing too big. Would suit students on holidays, someone who needs the money, etc.”
You will be required for about four hours on each of the five race days (Wednesday, January 23-Sunday, January 27).
