Forgotten World Highway voted one of world’s best bike rides

-

The back-country highway in Taranaki, known as the Forgotten World Highway (State Highway 43), has been listed as the 10th best cycle ride in the world by Lonely Planet. In August 2011, the first New Zealand Cycle Trail Heartland Ride was opened, and followed the Forgotten World Highway and an old coach road to finish on the stunning New Plymouth Coastal Path. The route also rated highly in a 2018 Transport Agency survey conducted to understand the experiences of people cycle touring in New Zealand, with 93% of people who had completed it rating it as one of their top three cycle tours. The cycle touring survey information is used to help plan investment to improve the experience for cycle tourists. It includes maps of the North and South Islands of: * The routes ridden by cycle tourists who responded to the survey * The roads most enjoyed by cycle tourists who responded to the survey * The roads least enjoyed by cycle tourists who responded to the survey.
