Sea lion caution
People around Dunedin beaches are urged to be cautious and keep dogs on a lead as the sea lion pup season begins. John Wilson Ocean Drive is closed to cars to protect a mother and pup who’ve made a home at a golf course. At least 10 other females have been spotted, with another 10 expected for the season. DoC Coastal Biodiversity ranger Jim Fyfe says the mothers are trying to evade male sea lions but they don’t know about the dangers from people.
