Liar’s Candle

- By August Thomas Published by Simon & Schuster, June 2018 Paperback RRP $29.99 Reviewed by Paul Brooks

Liar’s Candle is a tale of someone innocent who is falsely accused.

Penny Kessler is an intern at the US Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. She pretty much does as she’s told, no questions asked.

When a terrorist at the embassy leaves hundreds of her colleagues dead, and she wakes up in hospital after the event, Penny is used as the cover girl for the US promise of justice.

Then things start to turn when she is suspected of being in league with the terrorists.

Penny first has to realise she’s a suspect, then try and evade capture and possible torture and execution or imprisonment by any of the multiple agencies out to find her.

She manages to team up with a CIA officer who was sent to bring her in, until events convince both of them that no one is on their side and Penny might actually be someone’s scapegoat.

It’s a hell of a ride, actionpacked and filled with surprises.

Liar’s Candle is one of those books you’ll thoroughly enjoy during the reading, but won’t necessarily recall afterwards. It’s a story told by a good writer, fluent in the subject of which she writes.

This is August Thomas’ debut novel and I hope it won’t be her last. She has some stories to tell.
