Get that country mix right and combine pretty prairie dresses with utilitarian separates for plenty of versatility

There’s a reason why the fashion world loves Stevie Nicks. Who else can pull off that distinctive mix of rock, gypsy, prairie and country into a single unique look? Stevie’s penchant for prairie dresses, in particular, continues to inspire designers every season. While off-the-shoulder peasant tops and dresses made an impact over summer, how does one segue that idea when the temperature cools? Be swept away by the romance of the Wild West and classic stylings of the beloved Southern Belle — think folkloric floral print dresses inspired by the country teamed with cowgirl boots and tactile denim. Garments loved and worn by land girls also provide plenty of inspiration, and rather than reduce the memory of those hard-working women to a pile of clothes, their approach to being practical in the elements by throwing a durable coat in denim or suede over a dress and boots provides the perfect blue print for high/low dressing that New Zealanders are generally drawn to. The formula is a good starting point for investing in a decent pair of winter boots, with plenty of Western detailing to be inspired by — including sharp buckles and sturdy Cuban heels; and if you’re game, this season’s interesting layering preference of a whimsical dress over a pair of your favourite jeans is an easy pass out of squaresville.
