Bill Gosden’s favourite films
It’s probably no surprise that Gosden’s favourite films constantly change. The 1975 Russian film The Mirror by director Andrei Tarkovsky, about a dying man in his 40s who remembers his past, is a current favourite, as is Peter Fonda’s 1971 classic, The Hired Hand. “After the recent death of Jonathan Demme I also re- watched Something Wild, which I loved.” But Gosden never wavers from his favourite New Zealand film. “That would be Utu, an incredibly potent film, which is not only beautifully cinematic but also engages with some of the things that make us New Zealanders. It’s why I was so pleased to be able to screen the recut, Utu Redux, in 2013.”
