Peter Wells is dying. The renaissance man of New Zealand literature and arts — novelist, historian, film-maker, co-founder of the Auckland Writers Festival — has been open about his illness from prostate cancer, initially writing about it via a series of Facebook posts from his hospital bed earlier this year, now adapted and updated for his just published book, Hello Darkness.
His friend David Herkt has spoken to Peter over a series of hospital visits, emails, text and calls and his story is published here today. We love to praise those near death for their bravery, as if they have any choice but to face it but Peter’s grace — and his intellect — radiate off the page.
