New kids on the block

Four fragrances new to the beauty counter this month

- Tracey Strange

Powdery and heady without being overpowering, Miu Miu’s Twist ($185/100ml)

is a mix of vert de bergamot (a spicy ingredient that stops it from being sugary) and apple blossom. Cedarwood and pink amber (think burnt sugar cane) add the base. A combination of classic and unexpected notes, it’s sweetish and statement-making.

Marc Jacobs’ new flanker (a slightly different version of the original), Daisy Love Sunshine ($119/50ml)

also includes bergamot (the ingredient that gives Earl Grey its distinctive smell) but, due to its slightly more amped-up citrus notes, it’s lighter than Twist. It’s modern and sunny — and the bottle is gorgeous. Fans of the Daisy collection won’t be disappointed.

Another flanker, L’Eau d’Issey Pure Eau de Parfum ($195/90ml)

really does live up to its name. Clean and refreshing, it combines ambergris (which is sweet but not saccharine) with another pure-smelling marineesque note called maritima. White flowers give it a floral tone. The result is like fresh air or clean laundry and lovely.

Youthful and summery, Elie Saab’s Girl of Now Forever ($215/90ml)

is memorable and pretty. Like the original, it includes the orangey/ almond ormond flower, although in this flanker it’s mixed with raspberry and other fruity notes such as lemon zest, mandarin and blackcurrant. Sweetish but not syrupy.
