In a new exhibition Does Ava Dream? on now at Pataka in Porirua, New Zealand photographer Grant Sheehan imagines that a near-future artificial general intelligence might develop the ability to dream — and what those dreams might look like. Fusing art and science, Does Ava Dream? brings together photography, film, music, sculpture, and cutting-edge technology. The photographic dreamscapes are created using high-res pattern images combined with artificial neural network photography plug-ins.

Continuing the theme of AI and robotics, Sheehan has printed these images on to metal — both as large display prints and as a 40-page, 9kg aluminium book. A short film shows the dreamscapes in motion. The music for this film, like the images, has been co-created by artificial and human intelligence.
