One of the best trips I’ve had was to Palm Springs in 2014, exploring Salvation Mountain, created by local resident Leonard Knight. Even more confronting was the humanity exposed at Slab City — the neighbouring community of squatters and people who have resigned from society, described as an enclave of anarchy. In all its psychedelic colours, the mountain of adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint is a surreal sight in the middle of the Californian desert. The Folk Art Society of America has declared it “a folk art site worthy of preservation and protection”. I hope to make it back there soon.
