A quiet revolution has been happening in rural districts around NZ. Following in the footsteps of wine and craft beer, the number of artisans making incredible cheeses has been growing consistent­ly. Their adaptions of European styles are now surpassing the originals, and they are also creating some truly local cheeses like the world’s first proper deer milk cheese.

The problem is getting them to market. Many cheesemake­rs sell most of their products through farmers’ markets, with retail outlets not interested in small volumes or cheeses that push boundaries. The Cheese Wheel solves this problem by finding the best NZ artisan cheeses and delivering four each month to your door.

We tell you about the provenance of each cheese, and suggest wine or beer matches. Our website (www.thecheesew­heel.co.nz) profiles more than 25 cheesemake­rs we work with. Aside from the huge range of styles, there are lots of mammals involved too in our monthly cheese boxes, including deer, sheep, goats, buffaloes, and cows. One of our founders wrote an article in the NZ Herald exploring how better cheese is following the path of better beer all around the world (‘Will cheese become New Zealand's next craft beer?’) and The Cheese Wheel is supporting New Zealanders to do this.
