Wharf extension vote

- W. D. Howard, Pakuranga.

I am the sort of voter candidates do not like — I have a long memory. I also have the record of councillors’ voting on the port company extension plans as reported by your newspaper in April last year. This was the “compromise” which would have seen the extension of the eastern end of Bledisloe Wharf some 98m into the Waitemata Harbour.

Those who supported the extension were Len Brown, Arthur Anae, Bill Cashmore, Linda Cooper, Penny Hulse, Alf Filipaina, Calum Penrose and Sharon Stewart. Those who conveniently absented themselves from the debate and from the vote were Denise Crum, Dick Quax, Sir John Walker, Wayne Walker and Penny Webster. Brickbats to these people.

Many of your readers will look favourably on those councillors who opposed the port extension. They were Cameron Brewer, Cathy Casey, Ross Clow, Chris Darby, Christine Fletcher, Mike Lee, John Watson and George Wood. It would seem Phil Goff is a certainty to be Auckland’s next mayor. No doubt he would be better than our encumbent, but don’t let those blue billboards fool you; our Phil is as red as the Chinese flag.

He has already stated he is not prepared to sell assets to pay off
