WSL Championship, today 7pm then daily.

Women are in the spotlight this week as they contest the eighth of 10 events on their circuit. The first of only two carnivals in Europe, the Cascais Pro in Portugal is followed next month by the French stop. Australian Tyler Wright leads the standings with 53,450 points and US$ 280,500, which is more than men’s leader John John Florence has banked. Wright has dominated, winning four of the seven events so far — a far cry from last year, when she won only once en route to fifth overall after a ninth placing here. American Courtney Conlogue, who won this one last year ( one of three wins in 2015), trails Wright by 7000 points, with Hawaiians Carissa Moore and Tatiana Weston- Webb next. Moore, last year’s champion, has yet to win this term but has been a model of consistency, with just two finishes outside the top three — a fifth and ninth. Stephanie Gilmore is up two places to fifth. The Australian had a frustrating, injury- hit 2015, finishing 12th, but good points in the last three outings could see her snatch a podium spot.
