Punter puts $ 100k on All Blacks

Bookies have plonked the longest- ever odds on the Wallabies to beat men in black at Eden Park

One Kiwi punter has a hundred thousand reasons for the All Blacks to rewrite the record books tonight — and remain unbeaten for 2016.

A whopping $ 100,000 bet was slapped on the All Blacks at the start of the season — paying $ 1.50 — for the back- to- back world champions to not lose a game all year.

The All Blacks aim to set a new world record unbeaten streak of 18 straight wins at Eden Park tonight against the Wallabies. Then it’s just the end of year tour which separates Steve Hansen’s team from a clean sweep of 2016.

And for one man, that means five games stand between him and a $ 150,000 payday.

“We’ve had one bet of $ 100,000 on them to go unbeaten this year at $ 1.50. That blows everything out of the water,” TAB bookie Mark Stafford said. “At their last race before the Olympics, Hamish Bond and Eric Murray were paying $ 1.30 to win, so basically the All Blacks are as sure a thing as them.”

At the other end of the scale, the Wallabies haven’t beaten the All Blacks at Eden Park since 1986. Combined with their dire recent form, the bookies have plonked the longest- ever odds on the Wallabies to beat the men in black.

“Australia are at $ 10 to beat them. They have never been that high, never,” Stafford said. “When we offer a decent team, and based off world rankings Australia are a decent side, you do get some money on it.

“Same with South Africa, when they were here we had $ 9 on them and took a fair amount of money on that, especially on the day of the game.

“People start thinking ‘ what if, what if ?’ and they can turn $ 10 into $ 100. You do get a bit of $ 10 and $ 20 traffic on the day of the match.

“I’d imagine we’d get a lot of that again this weekend.”

Stafford said punters are letting rip on the All Blacks running riot tonight.

“We’re seeing money go on a win of 31 points and over, at $ 2.60, and all the try- scoring books are all All Blacks, there’s nothing to do with the Wallabies,” he said. “All the ancillary books are heavily backed in New Zealand’s favour.”

Almost exactly a year ago, a monster $ 400,000 bet was placed on the All Blacks to win the Rugby World Cup — the biggest bet in New Zealand history.

The punt, which saw the brave Kiwi bank $ 540,000, floored TAB staff as it was almost double the size of the previous record, which had stood for 13 years.
