Mammoth proportions make this apartment quite unlike any other, writes Donna McIntyre

It was the size. All 155sq m of it, stretching from one side of the building to the other. Sandra and Philip Jenkins had never seen anything like it in any other apartment in Auckland. They think the building’s name, Manhattan, reflects the style of their apartment too, being similar to New York’s brownstone buildings where apartments are lofty and bookcases line the walls.

“It is unusual to find such a big apartment in the city centre,” says Sandra.

Their interest in the building dates well back to before they bought this apartment 10 years ago.

Philip worked nearby when Fletchers built the building, which was later converted from offices to 80 freehold apartments by Mansons. The engineers Philip worked with would comment on the building’s solid construction.

When this apartment was for sale, Philip came to view it and told the agent to keep the keys in his pocket because he was confident Sandra would be keen. He was right. She, too, was impressed by the sheer volume, and the deal was done.

The apartment had originally been destined to be three units. “We did consider turning it back into two or three apartments or adding some bedrooms. But we realised what we liked about it
