Mini pop- up restaurant has big reputation

-

A college student who transformed his dorm room into one of the hottest restaurants in New York is hosting a pop- up dining experience in Auckland today.

Jonah Reider began a four- seat mini restaurant in his Columbia University dorm room in September 2015.

He quickly accrued a waiting list of more than 4000 people for the restaurant dubbed Pith.

The New York Post called Pith “the hottest table in town” and he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

He i s today creating the experience for six guests in a 40sq m apartment in West Auckland.

The guests, a mix of individuals and couples, were chosen from hundreds who expressed interest online. They will get a $ 25 four- course set menu made from largely seasonal New Zealand produce, and drinks.

Reider told the Weekend Herald guests could expect a cross between having a family meal at home and eating in a traditional restaurant.

“I found there was a need to have an intimate dining experience where you could get great food but also connect with people.

“Traditional restaurants are so expensive and formal and hierarchical. This is a space where you get to eat a meal that’s curated, but the atmosphere is laidback and relaxed.”

Reider has taken his small pop- up restaurant to several American cities outside New York and Sydney.
