Weekend Herald

Rod Emmerson’s view

A quick word

If ratepayers or taxpayers are to be “slugged” to help fund the Parker fight then we can expect to view it on free to air. If not then one can see the same on any weekend night in downtown Auckland. Let’s make a “business case” for knocking some sense into the chumps from Ateed gleefully flinging ratepayer money into the Parker ring while core services like libraries are being pummelled. How much for a ticket to the fight? I bet the average punter will struggle to afford one. And let’s hope Joseph Parker is still financially viable in 10 years. I hear in New York there is a new syndrome — election stress syndrome. The inhabitants of Wall St are displaying clear signs of that condition. The US Democratic Party and the National Party are the same not just because of their colour of choice but in their shared contempt towards the poor. The FBI is now being called “Trumplandia” and its mantra of “trust us we know what we are doing!” is being exposed as a sham. The Republican call to reduce bureaucracy (“drain the swamp”) could start here. The Massey daily quiz of November 3 opened with a question regarding an iconic Kiwi product first produced in 1886. The answer: Anchor butter. Somewhat ironic, since Countdown has recently deleted this item. If the opponents of the British paedophile investigation had hoped to derail the process, they have instead attracted increased publicity and brought the whole unsavoury mess more prominently into public consciousness. There is one sure way to fix the trouble at Novopay. Put the politicians on that payroll. What’s up with Warren Gatland? Has he forgotten he’s a Kiwi? Keep calm Gats, and may the best team win. I do not get Seinfeld. You? Perhaps the real reason those who know better feel the need to rebrand Auckland every five minutes is that Auckland really doesn’t have anything truly world class, amazing or distinctive going for it.
