Phoenix face test of depth in clash with Central Coast

The Wellington Phoenix face a test of their depth as they look to win consecutive A- League matches for the first time in over a year tonight.

Five players who started the 2- 0 victory over the Newcastle Jets last weekend are in camp with the All Whites, who face New Caledonia in a World Cup qualifier at Albany just hours before the Phoenix meet the Central Coast Mariners in Canberra.

With Glen Moss, Andrew Durante, Kosta Barbarouses, Michael McGlinchey and Louis Fenton all on international duty, Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick will dig deep into his roster to put out a side.

Roly Bonevacia and Hamish Watson come in for Barbarouses and McGlinchey, while goalkeeper Lewis Italiano will play his second A- League game. Further back, Dylan Fox i s likely to fill the unfamiliar role of leftback with young Australian Ryan Lowry set to debut in central defence.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Lowry. “With five guys away, it gives a chance for other boys to step up and stake their claim to be in the starting 11, which i s what I want to do ultimately. I’ve got a hard job to do on the weekend, so I’m just looking forward to that.”

Roy Krishna’s brace was enough to see off the Jets and give the Phoenix their first points of the campaign in Wellington a week ago. The Fijian flier is confident they can cover the absence of so many front- line players.

“The boys are gone but we’ve got strong depth, so nothing changes. We’ve got to do a job, and we’re looking forward to this weekend.”

The change in personnel will likely see a t weak in formation, with Krishna and Watson playing as a front two and Bonevacia and Gui Finkler behind them, adding attacking thrust. Alex Rodriguez and skipper for the day Vince Lia will anchor midfield. Wayne Bennett has urged Benji Marshall to return to the running and flick- passing NRL excitement machine of old at Brisbane next season. The Broncos confirmed his arrival yesterday and the former New Zealand playmaker said he had spoken with Bennett about turning back the clock next season. “That’s one thing Wayne made clear to me,” said Marshall. “I just need you to be the Benji I was 10 years ago when I was smiling and laughing throwing flick passes at training.” Chris Kirk shot an 8- under 63 yesterday to take a one- stroke lead in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Kirk had four birdies on each nine in his bogey- free round on Mayakoba’s Greg Norman- designed El Camaleon course. He won the last of his four PGA Tour titles in 2015. President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Government to look at way of tightening anti- doping controls in Russian sport, according to a statement on the Kremlin website. Putin, a keen practitioner of judo and ice hockey, ordered the property of the national Anti- Doping Laboratory to be transferred to a newly created body, the website said yesterday without elaborating. Russian track and field athletes were banned from this summer’s Rio Olympics after a World Anti- Doping Agency ( WADA) report uncovered systematic statesponsored doping. Joey Barton’s tumultuous spell at Rangers ended yesterday as the club announced they had terminated the midfielder’s contract with immediate effect. The 34- year- old Englishman, who joined Rangers on a two- year contract in May, returned to the Scottish Premiership club last week after a six- week suspension following an altercation with a team mate. New Zealand’s Damian Karauna has replaced Tomohiro Segawa as coach of the Japan men’s sevens team, the Japan Rugby Football Union ( JRFU) said yesterday. Karauna, 41, was New Zealand’s assistant coach at the Rio Olympics, and his first assignment will be to lead Japan at the Dubai Sevens from December 2- 3. The Professional Footballers’ Association has voiced concerns over Jose Mourinho’s criticism of Manchester United defenders Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw, urging the manager to show more empathy towards players with personal problems. Mourinho condemned Shaw and Smalling over the pair’s apparent unwillingness to play through the pain barrier in Sunday’s English Premier League win over Swansea City, saying they were not brave enough to feature. Parramatta have moved quickly to cover the loss of the retired Danny Wicks by announcing the signing of another former bad boy in Suaia Matagi. The Eels confirmed the 28- year- old had been given a twoyear deal, filling the sizeable hole vacated by the surprise retirement of Wicks earlier this week. Matagi’s arrival comes almost 10 years after being sentenced to three years’ jail for a flurry of assault charges during his wild days as a teenager in New Zealand. Gareth Southgate has confirmed Wayne Rooney will return to captain England against Scotland in the World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Rooney was dropped for the goalless draw with Slovenia in October, while he has also been left out by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho at club level recently. Rangana Herath has grabbed Zimbabwe’s final three wickets to return 8- 63 as Sri Lanka wasted little time in finishing off the hosts on the final morning of the second Test at the Harare Sports Club. The home side, teetering on 7- 180 overnight, survived 13 overs on Thursday before being bowled out for 233 as Sri Lanka won by 257 runs to compete a sweep of the two- match series.
