Lonely farmer takes love quest to TV

A Waikato farmer who took to social media to find love has turned down 500 offers from potential suitors for a chance to appear on reality TV.

Dairy farmer Marcella Bakker shared a modelling shot and her story with NZ Farming’s Facebook page in September.

Despite attracting more than 250,000 views and a number of offers, Bakker has ditched her search for a rural man and applied for The Bachelor NZ.

She has made the final stages of casting and said she was doing “relatively well”. “I am in it for love, definitely.” When asked about her success on NZ Farming’s Facebook page, Bakker said it wasn’t quite what she was looking for.

“A lot of people have [ contacted] me,” she told NZ Herald Focus.

“It hasn’t been successful . . . I haven’t actually found anyone. I had plenty of response but probably not what I was looking for.”

The 24- year- old said a lot of the Picture / Kali Jane Photography responses were from men who were divorced or had children.

“That’s not what I was looking for. I just want someone who’s intelligent and has their own goals . . . in life.”

Asked about the quality of men in the farming world, Bakker reckons some need to learn manners and upskill.

“Maybe I am too fussy but you’re allowed to be if it’s for a long- term partner. I think you should be fussy, you shouldn’t just settle for anything. For video with Marcella Bakker go to nzherald. co. nz

“I do wonder what’s wrong with me if I can’t attract the right people. I seem to attract a lot of the wrong people, so I must be putting a bad vibe out there somehow.”

Bakker’s Facebook post outlined the bachelor she is looking for.

“A nice farming guy” to partner up with. A “kind man” that has “respect for himself and women”. And she shares that she loves the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and having “a good yarn”. Six fire crews were last night battling a “well involved” Nelson house fire and searching the property to see if anyone was inside. Southern fire communications shift manager Tim Reynolds said two appliances were sent from Stokes fire brigade after several people called 111 just before 9pm. When the crews arrived at the house on Cawthron Cres they found a large blaze and two brigades each from Richmond and Nelson were then sent, Reynolds said. Unionised ambulance officers at St John are stepping up their industrial action by refusing to cover marathons, triathlons and pre- Christmas concerts. The First Union said more than 800 ambulance staff in the North Island would take part in an “events ban” and refuse to provide cover for summer events such as Christmas in the Park. The ban from December 17 won’t affect the Coca- Cola Christmas in the Park at the Auckland Domain, which is being held earlier on December 10. But the union said there were many similar community concerts in the North Island that would be affected, as well as all the other events St John officers attended, such as sports events. St John said it could not comment as it had not received notice of the ban. Trade Minister Todd McClay will lead the first trade delegation from New Zealand to Iran in 12 years after sanctions were lifted when the historic nuclear deal was signed last year. McClay will lead a delegation of businesses including Sealord, Tait Communication, Fonterra and Flight Coffee on the first such visit in 12 years. McClay has invited Labour’s trade spokesman, David Clark. A 23- year- old man who allegedly stole bags, phones and computers from Auckland Library patrons is on the run. Ashwani Aggarwal failed to appear in court on several theft charges and police have issued six warrants for his arrest. Police said Aggarwal was considered dangerous and warned the public not to approach him. Police said Aggarwal was “actively evading” them. They asked anyone who has seen Aggarwal to call 111 immediately. A teenager was left in a critical condition after the car he was driving went through a railtrack barrier and crashed down a bank in Wellington. The 17- year- old was flown to Wellington Hospital by Wellington Westpac rescue helicopter. Members of the public kept the driver alive until emergency services arrived at the scene on Middleton Rd, Glenside, where the car was lying upside down in a small creek. Voters in the Mt Roskill electorate go to the polls today to choose a replacement for long- serving Labour MP Phil Goff. The byelection was called after Goff retired from Parliament to become Auckland Mayor. Seven candidates are vying to become Mt Roskill’s new MP. Papamoa, Ohope and Golden Bay will be some of the best beaches to head to this weekend, says MetService. Meteorologist Peter Little said most of the country would be in for a “pretty good weekend”. A ridge of high pressure was moving over the country, bringing warm weather and light winds.
