When families are looking for a fabulous beach holiday, they may look to the Pacific Islands or the Gold Coast. But there is a booming tourism mecca right here in the Bay of Plenty that still gives the feeling of getting away from it all.

Less than one hour from Tauranga and two hours from Auckland lies Waihi Beach a hidden paradise that boasts a 9km stretch of inviting sand. Waihi Beach is one of New Zealand’s safest surf beaches and home to a bustling and friendly beachside community.

The area is experiencing a growth spurt with new and refurbished boutiques and restaurants – including the recently refurbished beach front Flat White, and the upmarket bistro and gelato bar garden at the Waihi Beach hotel. Art, design and clothes shops along Wilson Road attract keen shoppers.

The Waihi Beach TOP 10 Holiday Resort run by husband and wife team Ian and Vicki Smith for 21 years – is one of the first camp sites in New Zealand. Since then the park has been meticulously developed and upgraded to one of New Zealand’s most sought after and top rated holiday parks. Over the years it has won many awards, local, regional and national.

It is currently rated 5 star Qualmark and 4 Star Plus for the Motel Accommodation within the park.

The Smiths have used their tourism expertise to grow the park into a beloved destination for holiday makers who remain fiercely loyal guests. “We have families coming now with their own children who originally came here as children. People pay their deposit down for next year’s booking while they are on holiday this year!” says Ian.

Many of the sites enjoy sea or bush views – coupled with its top class facilities the park is attracting international visitors ( 30% pa) to sample the typical Kiwi camping holiday.

The site has a number of accommodation options – from 11 motel units with sea views to smaller units and cabins nestled throughout the resort’s garden and bush settings, through to camping sites.

In all there are 11 motel units, 4 self- contained units, 3 x 4 berth cabins, 4 x 5 berth cabins, 8 x 6 berth cabins, 62 powered sites, 2 un- powered sites and 60 onsite annuals.

The hub of the park is the magnificent heated 25m pool with slide, spa area, gym and sauna, pizza oven and barbecue area and dining room, TV lounge with internet, library and Sky TV and lounge seating. Apart from the pool, there is plenty to entertain the kids, such as a playground, under- fives room, and Jumping Pillow and holiday kids’ activities.

On site staff ensure all needs are met, and feedback from contented customers is the attention to detail, the cheeriness of the staff which gives a family atmosphere and importantly, communal areas are scrupulously clean and maintained to high standards.

It is the traditional Kiwi camping holiday with all the comforts of home and the luxury of a top resort.
