Take it away

IN

Coming in for lunch from the city we rang, only to be told no phone orders are taken. Phone manner: polite but busy. It’s 2017, you order online ( there’s even an iOS app). I completed the simple ordering process. Being a firsttimer I had to create an account and password — but all done in five minutes. The site’s good, the menu easy to navigate — add extras, leave out this or that — you basically build up your burger. There are three locations: Newmarket, Ponsonby, Takapuna. Ensure you choose the one you’re driving to. You’re told your order has been processed and how many minutes it’ll be — ours was 12. You pay online, no option to pay when you pick up.

OUT

Parking’s tricky. Your best bet is run in while the driver circles. Everything was on time. A big, brown paper bag, stapled shut was waiting. Inside, both burgers and broccoli in sturdy, separate cardboard boxes labelled clearly, lots of napkins ( which you’ll need) in the bottom. No utensils though. We got lucky and found a park — both sorts — Brown Reserve is a minute walk away and a great burger- eating spot in daylight hours.

THE TAKEAWAY

We ordered a lamb ($ 14) and a beef burger with cheese ($ 14), two vanilla thick shakes ($ 10 each) and some charred broccoli with garlic, butter and almonds ($ 12). It’s been around a few years but Burger Burger does it well. The brioche buns are wonderful. The broccoli ($ 12) is a healthy option instead of fries — but it’s good too. Only complaint: a touch too much sauce on my lamb. And, not the cheapest thick shakes, but definitely the best in town.
