A quick word

-

Ever since Homo sapiens walked this Earth and started warring against each other, there have always been innocent casualties. So what’s new? D. B. Kennedy, Hillsborough. The atrocities of war are evil and unjustified. Unfortunately they happen and innocent people suffer. Our brave service men are under threat, every second of every day they serve in an effort to bring peace. If Hager and Stevenson are so concerned may I suggest they enlist, with our brave armed forces, and do better. M. P. O’Connor, Mt Maunganui. Recent media coverage indicates that Nicky Hager is unpopular. It would be a great shame if that blinded people to the possibility that his claims about the SAS incident were correct. Let the authorities investigate. This is about honour, trust, reputation and integrity. John Walsh, Green Bay. Largely due to the triennial timing of his publications, for many people, Nicky Hager suffers the same credibility issue as the little boy who cried wolf. Mike Wagg. If my master instructed me to jump off a bridge to my death I’d tell him to go take a hike, and earn myself a better way of life elsewhere. Glenn Forsyth. Once more an Islamic vehicle of tolerance has engaged in an intercultural exchange with the Western public. But of course, the followers of the Religion of Peace are the real victims. The Western democracies — or at least our ruling bourgeois elite — will continue to act like chickens who keep inviting the fox back into the coop. C. C. McDowall. The boy with the long hair says he has a right to go to Auckland Grammar, without hair cut to the schools standard. The school has laws and rules and the right to take them seriously. Whose right is the right right? D. Hoekstra, Papakura. Discrimination on the basis of hair length is absolutely no different to discrimination on the basis of other physical features such as skin colour. Such behaviour has no place in a mature, tolerant and open society. It is blind prejudice with no moral basis or justifiability whatsoever. By all accounts, Christ had long hair, and his ideals and values are what Auckland Grammar School professes to promote! Tony Forster, Mt Eden. As I recall it, the last time Mr Hager published a book, National was returned with an increased majority. John Clements, Orewa. New Zealanders should be grateful to Hagar and Stephenson — or are we no longer interested in the truth? J. L. Black.
