DEZLEY SCOTTDAVIDSON IS A CONVERT TO CONVERTIBLES
What are you driving?
I drive a red Toyota MRS Spyder. It’s manual and it has the number plate DEZLEY. I always wanted a convertible, and when my eldest daughter got her own car it meant I didn’t need a family car any more. It handles well and, cos it’s low to the ground, it makes it feel like you’re going faster than you should be.
How does your car fit your personality?
My car fits my personality — perfectly fun, spontaneous, summer loving,
And how does it fit your commute and family life?
I drive it to work every day. It makes the trip into Ponsonby from Te Atatu South seem quicker, especially with the roof down and music blaring ( usually Joan Armatrading, 70s retro or country music).
Is it easy to clean?
It’s really easy to clean, I just take it to my father!
Who else is allowed to drive your convertible?
No one else is allowed to drive it; my name is on the personalised plate for a reason.
What do you keep in your car?
I always have sun screen in the glovebox. Sun and wind on a hot day can really burn your face.
Does having the top down mess with your hair?
It doesn’t play havoc with my hair as I have short back and sides. It makes a good hairdryer for my 13- year- old if she's just washed her hair ( especially on the motorway).
First car you owned?
The first car I owned was a 1961 Morris Minor ( side valve). I still miss that car. I got it when I was aged 16 and I drove it to Auckland Girls’ Grammar every morning. I even got a speeding ticket in it, going down Williamson Ave.
Your dream car?
It would have to be a Nash Metropolitan.
Who taught you to drive?
Dad taught me to drive, he was very impatient and the lesson usually ended in tears. ( Mine.)
You have a teenager, are you teaching her to drive?
My daughter is 13 and she tells me she doesn’t want to learn how to drive, as she prefers to read while in the car and this would never work.
Do you prefer manual or automatic?
I prefer manual. I love driving; automatic is for lazy drivers. There is nothing better than going through the gears.
Most memorable road trip?
None, I get car sick, unless I drive! I prefer to be a driver than a passenger.
If you could on a road trip with any celebrity anywhere in the world?
It would be Joan Armatrading. I’d tell her to bring her guitar and I would take her to Raglan. I reckon she’d sell out the local boat club!
Do you judge people by what they drive?
Never judge people by what they drive. Not everyone drives the car they’d really want. ( For years I drove a Barina!)
What irritates you most about other drivers?
Those who use their phones while they drive.
Any ideas for solving Auckland City’s congestion problem?
Trains to all areas; we could learn a lot from Melbourne.
