Bob McMillan was a trailblazer during his five decades as a leader in the New Zealand motor industry.
He died at home surrounded by his family early this week, aged 74.
McMillan began his career in the industry with Ford in the 1960s, later taking over his father’s Rover franchise in Auckland. He is credited with helping to pioneer after- sale vehicle warranties in this country.
In the 1980s he began a long, successful relationship with BMW. The German marque credited his drive and enthusiasm for helping it establish itself as a leading premium brand in this country.
McMillan also achieved a longstanding ambition to establish a Rolls Royce dealership in New Zealand, and Team McMillan began selling the BMWMini when it was introduced here.
In 2011 he decided to focus on the Roller concession, handing over the dealership reins to current managing director Ian Gibson.
When he retired, McMillan said: “I’m 72 years old in a couple of months and have been in the motor industry for almost 52 years, and I’m proud to leave with BMW at the peak of achievement in TONY VERDON terms of attaining Number One position.”
The McMillan family sold its 50 per cent business share to coowner Collins Asset Management several years ago.
During his career, McMillan demonstrated strong industry and community leadership, becoming one of the motor industry’s leading identities. Less visible was his community philanthropy.
He introduced Team McMillan Art Bonnet fundraisers, to help local charities and not- for- profit organisations. He was also a trustee of the South Auckland Health Foundation
Amiable and communicative, McMillan’s drive, confidence and people skills made an outstanding contribution to the enormous growth of our motor industry.
