Collection of losers

An objective, unbiased media is a critical organ of democracy. The election result just announced, to the obvious glee of many Herald journalist­s, is an indictment on NZ’s form of democracy and the role the media played in the outcome.

The final election result will install a Government to lead the country consisting of a rat- bag collection of losers led by a desperate Labour Party blindly supported by a far- left party of welfare fraud advocates and another party led by a cynical, selfservin­g madman.

It is ironic that 30 years ago today global markets melted down, bringing the New Zealand economy to its knees. Today we find ourselves lumbered with a new Government which more than likely will bring the New Zealand economy to its knees again.

It gives me cold comfort that in three years ( or less), today’s winners will be the biggest losers when they are punished by the electorate. I’m pleased to see Jonathan Coleman gone. As Minister of Health his refusal to tax soft drinks was very shortsight­ed. The huge surge in diabetes, obesity and heart disease as well as the early onset of Alzheimer’s can all be laid at the feet of the vast increase in sugar consumptio­n.

Grocery and food pressure groups distort the facts but I wonder if Mr Coleman’s kids and grandkids are
