A quick word

-

There is something special about a new Prime Minister being cheered by gathered crowds of wellwishers just after she has been sworn in. I cannot remember it happening before.

J. Hansen, Hastings.

After only one day, I get a strong feeling, that the coalition is going to put the word govern, back into government.

Owen Cunliffe, New Lynn.

Justice should be more than a title on a minister’s parliamentary door or part of a Wiki biography of some politician. It didn't take Andrew Little long to make the point in the Teina Pora case.

Peter Nicholson, Ruatangata.

With the alacrity the new Government is pledging to spend National’s carefully built surplus, the so- called “rich” should be bracing themselves for substantial tax hikes on personal income and a slowing of the economy.

Norma Cross, Oneroa.

You voted for the free stuff, now it's time to tax us to pay for it. A good time to give up work and become a student.

Randel Case, Bucklands Beach.

When Andrew Little opens the Pike River mine. He should invite Judith Collins and Gary Knowles, to lead the way in.

Ed Austin, Pukekohe.

Strange that in the article about the Niwa report on flooding due to global warming damaging drains and pipes, using the recent flood in Edgecumbe as an example, not a mention was made of the flooded area sinking in the 1987 earthquake.

Dave Spiers, Henderson.

Let us hope the new Prime Minister has a firm and clear ‘ no surprises’ policy with her Cabinet. With such a disparate group of ministers she won’t want too many of their disasters to sort out.

Graham Fleetwood, Mellons Bay.

Wow, the US ambassador to New Zealand told a Polynesian woman she was beautiful. That's not a world I want to live in. After the inquiry I imagine an execution would be in order.

Bill Brown, Herne Bay.

Now that Ron Mark is our new Defence Minister, will he listen sympathetically to any requests by the descendants of New Zealand soldiers buried overseas for those remains to be returned here for full military honours burials?

Heather Mackie, Upper Hutt.

Are the people producing global warming reports in air- conditioned offices? I just wonder as it’s been a very cold year out here in the real world.

Fiona Mackenzie, Stanmore Bay.
