Recognising Kiwis who made a difference

-

A gift to a homeless man, a moment of humanity in politics and a hero who saved a little girl — who has captured your imagination this year?

We want to know so we can recognise those who have made a remarkable difference.

For more than 25 years, the New Zealand Herald has honoured those who make our country a better place, with our annual New Zealander of the Year award.

Last year we introduced a People’s Choice Award to allow us to pay tribute to the inspiring stories in our communities — and give you the chance to vote for your favourite. This year, we’re doing it again. Today we reveal our 10 nominees and tell their stories. They include a terminally ill woman who has dedicated herself to helping others, a man who lost his life to save others, and someone willing to take on the Government to create a better country.

Last year’s winner emerged after a spate of youth suicides in the Far North. Only 18 at the time, Nina Griffiths led her town on a crusade against the tragedies to help stop other young people dying.

More than 4000 people voted, selecting Griffiths, who tearfully said this was not a win for her but “a win for this cause”.

It is precisely that dedication to this country and its people that make this award what it is.

The Weekend Herald is proud and privileged to tell these stories — and now it’s up to you.

Voting is open for one week only, so get your vote in before midnight next Saturday, December 9. The winner will be announced when we unveil our New Zealander of the Year in the Weekend Herald on December 30.
