Jonathan Coleman has decided he wants to relinquish his position as a representa­tive of the people so we have a byelection at the taxpayers’ expense. Surely if anyone is elected as a member of Parliament the least they can do is to see out their three-year term. Mike Jarman, One Tree Hill.

Much has been made of the enormous benefit to New Zealand from the Obama visit. As a taxpayer shareholde­r in Air New Zealand I am yet to see the cost-benefit calculatio­ns that justify the expense.

What a disgrace to the legal profession when a judge can dismiss a case where a man has beaten up a baby and its mother and receive only nine months home detention, and name suppressio­n. This sentence should be appealed to restore some dignity to the legal profession.

“Politician­s bailed out Air NZ” read a headline. So they did. Maybe Shane Jones should have his wish that Air NZ take on uneconomic­al routes. Then politician­s can bail Air NZ out a second time. With our money.

Surely the recruitmen­t company Sheffield is partially to blame. They received $110,000 to find Dr Murray but did not check with his former employees? The DHB head should have checked as well, but, crikey.

When will researcher­s stop trying to find an excuse for obesity, such as being male born into a single-parent family or whether you were breast-fed. The simple truth is if you eat too much of the wrong food you will get fat.
