Broncos win a stunner

The Brisbane Broncos edged the Sydney Roosters 28-22 last night in a thrilling NRL match that saw the lead change seven times. The Roosters looked on track for victory when Boyd Cordner’s 67th-minute try gave them a 22-16 lead. But a converted solo try from James Roberts levelled the scores before Jamayne Isaako touched down in the 79th minute to clinch a dramatic victory.

Leishman leading

Aussie golfer Marc Leishman shot a

10-under 61 on the new links-style Trinity Forest course to take the firstround lead in the AT&T Byron Nelson. Jordan Spieth was eight shots back in his hometown event, which returned to Dallas after 35 years at the TPC Four Seasons in suburban Irving. Defending champion Billy Horschel shot 68. The 34-year-old Australian, a three-time PGA Tour winner, had chances to go lower but settled for a

10-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th for the lowest round of his PGA Tour career.

Lightning strike again

Alex Killorn scored the tiebreaker with about eight minutes left, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 36 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning weathered the equivalent of more than a period without a shot on goal to edge the Washington Capitals 4-2 yesterday, levelling the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference final at two games apiece. The Lightning host game five tomorrow (NZT), with game six back in Washington on Tuesday.

Nadal gains revenge

Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal methodically wore down Denis Shapovalov 6-4 6-1 yesterday to reach the Italian Open tennis tournament’s last eight and gain revenge over the Canadian teenager. Four-time Rome winner Novak Djokovic reached his first quarter-final of the year with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Alberto Ramos-Vinolas. Djokovic next faces Kei Nishikori, who rolled past Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-1 6-2. The 19-year-old Shapovalov stunned Nadal in the third round in Montreal last year to deny the Spanish player a chance to regain the No 1 spot.

Mooloos suss out Gibbes

Waikato Rugby CEO Blair Foote has contacted incoming coach Jono Gibbes to address speculation he’ll pull out of his deal to coach the Mooloos this season. Reports out of France suggest Gibbes is visiting Top 14 club La Rochelle, despite being in the middle of preparations for the European Champions Cup qualifier with Ulster. Foote says he’s confident Gibbes, who signed with the Mitre 10 Cup side in March, is simply the subject of rumours. He says he has reached out to Gibbes but hasn’t heard back. Foote says there is no getout clause in Gibbes’ contract.

Jury is expected to be out for a minimum of six weeks, but if scans today reveal more extensive damage, her recovery time could be several months.
