Flowers were last night lying at the site of a horrific crash which killed two young people.

Pakuranga residents reported hearing a “loud bang” about 4.30am yesterday. However, the car was only found about 7.30am.

Police said the male and female in the car were dead when they arrived at the scene. On social media friends identified one of the victims as teenager Nathan Quist. In one tribute a friend described Quist as an “amazing person”.

“You were striving to be better a person and I believed that you did,” the tribute said.

The crashed vehicle veered off Pakuranga Rd and hit a building near Udys Rd and Johns Lane. It was severely damaged and split into at least four pieces.

Senior Sergeant Jono Chappell said speed appeared to be a factor.

“However this will form part of the investigation by our Serious Crash Unit.”

A patch of torn up grass marked where the car left the road. Two street lights had been knocked over and a fence was crumpled and partially ripped off.

One woman said her mother heard the crash in the early hours.

The building contains several businesses, including a dentist’s practice.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw a dark Honda Accord near Pakuranga Rd about 4.30am. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Counties Manukau Serious Crash Unit on 09 261 1300.

The deaths have been referred to the coroner.
