What I’d do
1 I’m definitely not a morning person. Which means I’ve just hit snooze for the fourth time and it’s time for my daily decision: “Am I going to have a shower or make a solid breakfast?” Since I’m in two performances of The Gruffalo & The Gruffalo’s Child today with the APO, the shower wins. Fortunately, Box Cafe in Aotea Square comes to the rescue with my morning almond milk latte and pastry. Oh yes, I’m one of “those” guys.
2 Last night we collaborated with New Zealand Opera to perform Verdi’s Aida on stage at the Auckland Town Hall and this morning we’re in the ASB Theatre with a family audience — time for something totally different.
I lie to myself and say I’m going to try something different but once I get in that car, I’m off to get my favourite pies. I head down Dominion Rd to the Bread Winner Bakery for a bacon and egg quiche and a mince savoury. We all swear by our best bakeries like they’re our hometown rugby teams and this is mine.
3 I live next to Cornwall Park, so it’s time for a run the top, accompanied by one of my favourite Kiwi bands, Leisure, in the headphones. I got really hooked on their music after we did a joint concert with them at the APO a few months back. Getting to the top and taking in that view reminds me how fortunate we are to live in a place filled with such natural beauty, even in the heart of the country’s biggest city.
4 If I had a label, “creative type” would certainly be it. I’m working on a solo album and it’s time to get some thoughts on the page. To do this, I head to Corner Burger in Mt Eden with my notebook and start by getting the creative juices flowing. Well . . . grape juice. Okay, it’s wine, I get the wine flowing.
5 I’m in a short film next week . When acting you’ve got to have no judgment about your character’s motivations. So what better way to get in that no judgment mindset than by capping off the evening with a treat-yo’self dessert? Down to Milse in Britomart it is, seated at the counter feeling like royalty as my pumpkin bourbon mousse arrives. It combines my two favourite things, because I have an October birthday, so pumpkin pie; and I grew up in Kentucky, so bourbon.
Steve Logan is the APO's principal timpanist .
