What I’d do

- Amber Curreen

1 Saturday morning will start too early on the sidelines of my girl’s netball game. Go Vipers! Hopefully I’ll have left the house in time to grab a Ko¯ kako coffee from my favourite spot at Demolition Deli. I’ll probably be the only parent on the sidelines trying to learn their lines in between quarters.

2 After the win (fingers crossed) I’ll head to Corban Estate Arts Centre. First things first I’ll pop my producer hat on and join my company Te Re¯ hia Theatre for karakia as the team starts the day of rehearsals for Albert Belz’s spooky new horror/thriller theatre show Cradle Song.

3 Shortly after, I’ll step into my actor boots and skip across the driveway to Shed 2 at the Corban Estate Arts Centre where I and some of the most amazingly talented women will present a free open rehearsal of Red Leap Theatre’s rollocking tale, Korora¯ reka: The Ballad of Maggie Flynn, before we set of on our North Island tour.

4 Off to town we go as the reka team Korora¯ head to the final night of Sam Brooks’ sell-out show Burn Her at Q Loft, a show close to our heart as it stars Miriama McDowell, a past cast member, and is produced by our marketing manager, Julie Zhu. After a full-on day, filled to the brim with powerful women and women’s stories, I’ll go to sleep with a full heart.

5 Sunday is no day of rest as Te Theatre Pou builds up to Ko¯ anga Festival 2018, our first event in our new home at Corban Estate. I’ll catch up with all the writers who are part of our Ko¯ anga Ma¯ ori playwrights development programme: four writers, three directors, four dramaturges, 12 actors and two beautiful nights of rehearsed readings don’t organise themselves. At the end of the day, I plan to put my feet up with a pot of tea, some 90 per cent dark chocolate and smash the codecracker in this here paper.
