Prince, 97, shaken in Norfolk car crash

-

Prince Philip had to be pulled from his overturned Land Rover when he was involved in a car crash while driving in rural England.

But, remarkably, the 97-year-old was uninjured. He was checked over by a doctor and determined to be fine.

The man first on the scene has described pulling the Duke of Edinburgh from the car, which lay on its side, and said the Duke told police he had been “dazzled by the sun” at a T-junction before the collision near Sandringham Estate in Norfolk on Thursday.

Barrister Roy Warne, 75, said he heard Prince Phillip cry, “My legs!” after crashing into a Kia carrying two women and a baby.

Warne then helped free the “conscious” but “disorientated” royal from the car.

Warne told the Sun: “I looked down and had the Prince’s blood on my hands. All I could think is, ‘Thank goodness there wasn’t more’.”

Prince Philip was left “conscious but very shocked and shaken” after the dramatic crash, which left two women in the other vehicle in hospital.

Warne said he went to the Kia first because smoke was coming from the vehicle and he heard a baby screaming.

“Once myself and another chap had managed to pull the baby out, I went to the overturned car,” he told the Sun.

“There was one elderly person inside and I tugged at the smashed windscreen and sun roof to try to get the driver out.

“He was lying on his side and his legs were down in the well of the car. I asked him to lift his left leg as his legs were trapped, and he said ‘Where to?’

“I suddenly realised it was Prince Philip. “As he lifted his left leg, there was room for his right leg to move.

“I reached into the car, put my hands under his armpits and gently eased him out.”

Warne said the Duke was able to stand but was “obviously very shocked”.

“He was disorientated and humbled. I believe he was very sorry about what had happened.

“The sun was very low in the sky. Considering his age he got off much better than the people in the other car.”

The two women and a baby were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with minor injuries and cuts and later discharged.

Prince Philip and the female Kia driver were breathalysed at the scene and both gave negative readings.

It is believed that the Prince’s Land Rover was heading out of a private estate road on the western side of the A149 when the collision occurred.
