Neeson admission

It annoys me that Liam Neeson has been branded a racist as a result of one historic incident. While in no way condoning his thinking, this was a reaction to a friend being raped by a man of a specific race and the reason he went looking to confront a man of that race. If the rapist had been a white Frenchman or German would there have been the same or any backlash for his admission?
