What I’d do

- Kate Meads

I always look forward to the weekend

sometimes it doesn’t start until Saturday, depending on where I am in the country at the time. If I’m at home on a Friday night I love going to the farmers’ market here in Katikati (best samosas ever) or I might call in for a fresh fruit icecream with one of my besties, Ange, at The Big Avocado. Followed by a night on the couch with my family watching whatever Netflix series we are hooked on at the moment. Katikati Plant and Produce Market every Friday, 4pm-6pm at the Katikati A&P Showgrounds.

Saturday mornings I’m always keen for

sleep-in but our two dogs, Rocket and Dodge, have other ideas and generally join us in bed, encouraging us to get up because it’s breakfast time. Once a few coffees have been consumed we’re ready for the day ahead. This will often be a trip to Tauranga to catch up on jobs and for breakfast at one of my fav cafes, Grindz Cafe, polished off with one of their Fusion coffees. Once the jobs are finished — getting my nails done and picking up some fresh pizza bases from the Gourmet Trader — it will be off home for a nap. I’ve got into a bad habit of napping, but it is sooo good! This is all followed by a date with Netflix on the couch again.

On Sunday I again dream of a sleep-in, no, it never happens. Once I’m up I’ll potter around in our garden and talk to my plants (and my husband), pull out a few weeds and harvest anything that needs harvesting. Then I need to unpack and repack my bag ready for the week ahead. I might fit in a walk along the river in Katikati just to feel like I accomplished some sort of exercise.

And to end the weekend we will generally be found at our neighbours’ place on their deck, drinking wine and eating pizzas made from our leftovers. Off to bed early and an early flight out of Tauranga Airport the next day.
