There are six bedrooms, six bathrooms — and the dog kennel comes with its own garden, writes LEIGH BRAMWELL
It may be one of the most splendid houses in Coatesville, but the co-owner of 5M The Promenade also has a fine appreciation of the simpler things in life.
She loves the lifestyle this beautifully designed sixbedroom, six-bathroom house provides, but cites her bedroom as her favourite space, for its view out to trees, cherry blossoms and roses in bloom.
“On weekends that makes it hard to get up in the morning,” she says.
The evolution of the 538sq m masonry home, built by specialists House of Nautica, began with finding the elevated 1.01ha block with its beautiful views overlooking the city in one direction and north/northwest across the valley in the other.
“I fell in love with it,” she says. “I could see the top of Rangitoto and the Skytower.”
Having lived in Geneva she liked the chateau style, and this project provided the opportunity for architecture “with a twist”.
The house is often described as having New York-style luxury, but the owner says the inspiration is Hollywood regency, with strong, natural materials like brass, stone and wood brought together in harmony.
She worked closely with her interior designer, Melissa Greenhough, to select and source international design features and fittings.
“We bounced ideas off each other and I really enjoyed that process of collaboration,” she says.
The entry to the house is a 4.8m-high foyer dressed in sandstone tiles and brass balustrades and with impressive feature lighting showcased by the high stud.
The living areas, floored in solid oak, include a chef’s kitchen and scullery, casual and formal
dining spaces, and casual and formal lounges.
“I wanted a formal lounge and separation is provided by the steel-framed, internal glass doors. You can see the amazing sunsets through those doors.”
A serene colour palette of warm neutral tones provides a backdrop for touches of opulent metallics in the light fittings, door hardware, drapes, tapware and furniture.
Practicalities have been equally well thought out with ducted conditioning that can be individually controlled in every room, and a built-in home theatre system.
Formality and symmetry are hallmarks of the property, and the landscape design by Robin Shafer has provided views from the house across an expansive tiled patio, lawns enclosed by box hedging, and a 15.3m pool with a water feature, automated cover and cleaning system, and selfcontained pool house. A fresh water bore and automated irrigation system add to the trouble-free enjoyment outdoors.
There are formal gardens, walkways and potager gardens, and a luxury dog kennel in its own enclosed garden.
The deadline set sale date is December 4, so the owners are looking for a new project. They hope to stay in the Coatesville area with its cafes, markets, picturesque village reserve and walking tracks, all with easy access to Albany and the city.
