Jewellery shop in Wanaka a sparkling gem on the lakefront

-

A profitable family jewellery business with prime lakefront premises in Wanaka is on the market.

The lease for Aspiring Jewellers is $70,000 a year and the business brings in well over $200,000 in annual income for owners Bruce and Pam Mayo.

Ricky Cockerill, from ABC Business Sales, says a new owner would not need to make any significant outlay as everything is set up.

“The architecturally designed store is immaculate inside and out. The opportunity to step into a business that is highly profitable and where you are working in such a pleasant environment makes this opportunity very attractive.”

“Imagine being surrounded by beautiful jewellery all day with the option of walking outside onto an idyllic lakefront setting to have your coffee break, then imagine making serious money doing just that,” Cockerill says. Bruce and Pam Mayo created this lifestyle for themselves when they opened Aspiring Jewellers in one of the most beautiful spots in New Zealand, in the centre of Wanaka and on the lakefront.

The couple, who are retiring, have a 50-year history in the jewellery industry with Bruce starting his apprenticeship in 1970.

They met in Whangarei when they were both beginning their careers in jewellery before moving to Parnell to work for Auckland jeweller Bay Hayden.

Their entrepreneurial passion flourished with Bruce starting his own jewellery repair service on the North Shore before the couple set up their own premises in Takapuna.

That business expanded rapidly, with nine jewellers employed at four workshops in Auckland and one in Rotorua.

In 2003, they sold the North Island jewellery business to Bruce’s brother and moved to Wanaka, opening Aspiring Jewellers in 2005.

This is now a busy retail jewellery store which, for the past 15 years, has seen impressive financial rewards by selling jewellery to the local and tourist population in Central Otago. The store stocks household names of high quality which sell well (approximately $1m per annum) at great margins, and Pam and Bruce have their own brand called Wanaka Tree.

Bruce has designed pieces depicting the iconic willow tree which grows out of Lake Wanaka and which is popular among locals and tourists.

There is a small workshop to the rear of the shop which is well set-up, however, most of the work is outsourced as manufacturing jewellers are rare.

Cockerill says this would be a great retail operation anyone could run but if a manufacturing jeweller wanted to get to work then the workshop is ready to go.

“The store is such a nice place to work in and then you step outside and the lake just takes your breath away,” he says.
