Rainy day expected in North Island

- Chelsea Boyle

Unsettled weather should hit much of the country today. Rain is expected in the upper North Island.

The pattern is for blustery winds and showers and even thunderstorms. MetService expects most areas of the upper North Island to get rain — some heavy — during the morning and into the afternoon.

Meteorologist Angus Hines said an unstable and unsettled westerly flow would sweep across the North Island this morning. Heavy rain would strike western areas especially in the morning, and a second front would hit the South Island later.

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty can expect showers turning to rain for a time with possible thunderstorms in Auckland.

Tomorrow, the MetService expects showers in the west and upper North Island, and mainly fine in the east. Rain is forecast for the South Island West Coast again tomorrow.

Monday, rain returns, likely in the Far North, around Coromandel Peninsula and Gisborne. It should be mainly fine elsewhere apart from morning showers north of Manawatu.

In the South Island, showers in the west and far south gradually clear.

Today, Whangarei will have morning showers, clearing through the afternoon to fine spells. Northwesterlies, gusty in the morning.
