A stylish new build for Mission Bay

These new Mission Bay apartments have reserve on one side, harbour on the other, shopping on the doorstep, finds LOUISE RICHARDSON

In its prime location on Mission Bay’s elevated skyline overlooking the harbour, this smart new lowrise development has garnered substantial interest amongst down-sizing locals looking for a scenic and secure lifestyle only 15 minutes from Auckland’s city centre.

Planning for 40 architecturally-designed apartments over four levels in a mix of studio, one, two and three-bedroom units has focused on making a luxurious lifestyle affordable.

The apartments reference the chic 1930s art deco flavour of much of Mission Bay’s classic heritage architecture. Until Tamaki Drive opened in 1932, many of these properties were used as holiday homes, reached from the city by ferry.

Paterson + Cullen + Archaus have been designing low-rise apartments for more than 30 years and in this particular project, sought to “balance beauty with pragmatism”.

One of the company’s directors explains that the form is a simple geometric box, facing east-west, with units on all faces.

“To the north, east and west there is sun and views toward the harbour, while Kepa Bush Reserve is to the south, so the building has no immediate

neighbours — apart from birds.

“With sustainable urban design, in mind the complex offers a few units without parking as it’s immediately adjacent to Eastridge Shopping Centre ... and there is excellent public transport available.”

He says bike parks are included in the design and the building has a waste management plan that minimises, sorts, and recycles refuse before it leaves the building. “Energy consumption is minimised via concrete construction and insulation products, plus double glazing, and rain will be harvested, for re-use on site.”

Construction on The Ridge is underway, with completion projected for December 2021. Reducing construction waste has been a serious consideration for the developer, and prefabricated products, including Belcanto aluminium balconies, have been used wherever possible.

The pet-friendly apartment interiors will feature American engineered oak flooring, designer kitchens with stone benchtops and Fisher & Paykel appliances (upgrade options to Meile appliances are available), and luxury bathrooms.

The director says that multiunit design is always more attractive with good quality landscaping.

Tania Brown from Barfoot and Thompson has been marketing this exciting new property, alongside colleague, Cici Wang. “The location’s fantastic and there are so many amenities in the shopping centre, including The Eatery.

“There’s a bus stop on the doorstep, or you can catch the train to Britomart.

“We’ve had huge interest from older people planning to downsize and from first-homebuyers because many of the apartments are affordable for them. We still have one studio left at $550,000, then for $695,000 you get one-bedroom plus an office.

“The prices are so reasonable because we’re selling off the plans and you only need to pay a 10 per cent deposit now, with the balance on completion.

Sale: Studio $550,000, onebedroom plus study from $695,000, two-bedroom from $895,000, three-bedroom from $1,795,000
