Comeback by Campbell cut

-

Michael Campbell’s comeback has lasted just one round at the British Masters, missing the cut after being unable to follow up his bright start to the tournament.

Campbell was left “completely flabbergasted” after finding himself close to the top of the leaderboard following a three-under round, but came back to Earth yesterday, firing a second-round nine-over par 80 to slump to a share of 125th, missing the cut by six strokes.

Campbell, who hasn’t made the cut on the European Tour since 2013, rolled back the years in his opening round but the 51-year-old carded eight bogies, a double bogey and a solitary birdie in his second round, in what was the worst round of the day.

New Zealand still has a player in the hunt, however, with Ryan Fox sitting in a share of eighth after carding consecutive 67s to be eight-under par — just three shots off the lead.

Fox has made the most of postlockdown golf so far, having only arrived in the UK on Monday as the European Tour returned to full action this week, with the first of six tournaments in Britain. He said his results so far have made the travel worth it.

“I needed to make the trip a long one to make it worthwhile with the rules we have getting back into New Zealand, so it’s certainly nice to get off to a good start,” Fox said. “In April, I didn’t really think we had a chance of playing for the rest of the year. I’ve been playing really nice at home socially and it was nice to be able to bring that over here.”

● Danny Lee was in a tie for 20th after shooting four-under in the first round of the 3M Open on the PGA Tour. Lee is four shots behind leader Richy Werenski, while fellow Kiwi Tim Wilkinson was on one-under at the TPC Twin Cities course in Minnesota.
