The device saving drivers THOUSANDS

Dashcams are popular, but there’s a huge range of models and prices to choose from. What do you get for your money?

-

Now, more than ever, dashcams are an imperative piece of technology for the modern motorist. In the event of an incident, the presence of recorded footage can make or break insurance claims while also providing security over false claims.

An Allianz Australia study found that 20 per cent of all drivers in Australia and New Zealand record their trips, with another 40 per cent of respondents stating that they were considering buying a dashcam in the coming year. Options for those shopping for a dashcam can be endless. Here are three excellent choices for different budgets.

Uniden IGO Cam 325: $94.99

As technology improves and adapts, dashcam technology gets cheaper and cheaper. There are plenty of options priced below $100, including the Uniden IGO CAM 325.

The ultra-compact recorder comes with a 1.5-inch screen paired to a full HD camera and wide-angle lens capable of recording footage in 720p resolution (which is saved on to a micro SD card, as opposed to being saved on the machine directly).

The small and relatively cheap Uniden comes with a few neat extra features, too. These include motion detection infrared night vision for monitoring activity in the dark.

Navman MiVue 745: $179.99

The Navman MiVue series represents plenty of value, and poised towards the base of the line-up is the

745. Along with basics like

1080p recording, this dashcam comes equipped with GPS tagged videos and a driver’s speed display. The latter not only helps with avoiding speeding tickets, but also can come in handy as evidence that a driver has been adhering to speed limits at the time of an accident. The Navman MiVue range is an expansive one, and for a few extra bucks you can upgrade to units like the 750 (which incorporates Wi-Fi) or the dual-cam 820.

Black Vue DR900S2CH: $849.23

Should you be so inclined, you can spend up to and beyond four figures on one of these devices. Black Vue specialises in the premium dashcam space. The DR900S-2CH is priced around $850, and comes loaded to the brim with features. The

8-megapixel CMOS sensor camera is a behemoth, capable of capturing 4K ultra-high-definition

1080p 30 frames per second footage. And naturally, dual-cam support means you can record what’s behind as well as what’s ahead. It may seem like a lot of money to spend on a camera, but your choice of dashcam could be the difference between breezing through your next insurance claim,or being stung by the rough end of the pineapple.
